Name: Coralee Drechsler
Comments: This surname comes to me from my maternal grandfather, whose grandparents (Adolph Drechsler and Frances Kinneman Drechsler) emigrated to Canada via the United States from Prussia.
I have been told that the surname means 'works with wood,' but I cannot verify that. I would love to find additional information, both about my family line and about the origins of the name.
Name: Peggy Drechsler
Comments: My grandfather said that Drechsler means "lathe turner", meaning a person who made spindles for furniture and fancy cabinetry. I have done extensive genealogical research on my Drechsler family line, which emigrated to northern Maine, United States, from Langenwetzendorf, Germany (close to the Czechoslovakian border on modern maps). The Langenwetzendorf synagogue is still intact, but is now a sectarian building (and probably has been since WW2 or possibly even WW1). My great-great grandfather was a cantor for that synagogue (if family stories are correct). My grandfather said that many family members still remaining in Europe were lost during the time period of the two world wars, and despite all efforts I have been unable to locate any still in Europe, nor have I found any relatives in Israel. (I have however found some in the United States.)

DRECHSLER: German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): variant of Dressler. Drechsler became the standard German term for the occupation of wood turner.
This supports my earlier comment. I should have also mentioned that a lathe is a machine used to turn a piece of wood against sharp knife blades of various shapes, which creates the symmetrical designs on decorative spindles.

Name: Peggy Drechsler
Comments: I have just learned today that the Lutheran church also calls its lead singer a cantor, so I think I probably misunderstood the family stories that I heard when I was young. My great-great grandfather most likely served as cantor of the Lutheran church, not of the synagogue as I wrote in the above message. I apologize for the error.
Name: Peggy Drechsler
Comments: I just learned today that the Lutheran church also calls its lead singer a cantor. Since the brothers were professed Lutherans after immigrating to the United States, it is much more likely that my great-great grandfather was cantor of the local Lutheran church in Langenwetzendorf than of the synagogue. I apologize for my error.
