Comments: There were a couple of Galinski families in Suwalki Guberniya, Poland. Some of them were Polish some of them were Jewish. The Polish and jewish families were not related. It seems to me that the Polish Galinski families in Suwalki Guberniya, Poland originated from a common ancestor that arrived to this region ca. 300 years ago. The re are some stories on how the galinski family name was transferred to Jewish people but I am not sure if they are true so I am not reproducing them here. On the other hand I would be highly interested to know more about it. Please contact me if you wish to exchange on the issue.

Comments: Wojteks comment above fits with the told history of my family and what small info I have found.
My great grandfather came to New York from Poland in 1910 with the last name Galinski, and swapped the i for a y upon arrival. (my grandmother just explained it as "the y was better for this place")
However, while my grandfather spoke Polish still, both he and my grandmother tended to use a bunch of yiddish idioms and words in their everyday speech. Both were non to semi-practicing Catholics who seemed thoroughly Jewish. (I was never sure if that was a result of my great grandfather raising my grandfather accordingly, or just the influence of my grandmother over so many decades of marriage before I was born)
Are you from Poland Wotjek? I would love to know more (even if it is just speculation)
Thank you for the information. I appreciate your time. :)

Comments: Yes, I am from Poland. I work on my extended Galinski family genealogy. I have more than 2500 related family members in my family tree (sometimes quite distantly related). I am not Jewish but I had a couple of contacts with the Jewish Galinski branch (also Gilinski/Gawenda).
Best greetings to All.
