Comments: In 1719 - Marcus Sekkel married Leentje Heiman. They lived in Gronigren, Holland. They had a son, Hartog Marcus Sekkel (1752-1837). He changed his name to vander Klei because he wanted a Dutch name. a Great grand son immigrated to America in 1893. I just found this out and am searching for other Sekkel with Dutch ties. (WWII could have put them any where in europe.)
Name: Wouter Bosma
Comments: Markus/Marcus Sekkel and Leentje Heimans lived in Loppersum and had 4 children: Izaak Markus/Marcus, Hartog Markus/Marcus, Froontje Markus/Marcus and Frouke Markus/Marcus. Izaak Marcus chose the surname van Berg, Hartog Marcus the surname van der Klei and both Froontje and Frouke married and had the surnames of their husbands. So after around 1814 no one used the name Sekkel anymore, Marcus Sekkel died in 1808 in Obergum. Most likely he was born in northen part of Germany and moved to Loppersum around between 1740 and 1750. I am a desendant 7 generations apart from Marcus Sekkel.
Name: Hendrik Broer
Comments: Hartog Markus Sekkel did not carry the name Sekkel, but was officially known as Hartog Markus ( meaning Hartog son of Markus). Every Dutchman had to adept an official surname by the law that was implemented by the occupier Napoleon Bonaparte. It was no longer sufficient to have only a familyname and as second the name of the father. On the 12th of February 1812 he choose the name Van der Klei as surname.
