kate agulnik It is very likely that we come from the AGUL region which is in the Caucasus mountains. The Agul people are now Muslim but they used to be a mixture of Jews, Christians and Muslims. obviously our surname -nik suggest jews, but their are also other jewish denominators such as AGUL-ar and you will find jews called Agular, we may even be connected with the Aguilar community but as proof that i have no idea I also suspect some Agulniks may have Anglicised their surnames to Agulnick Btw i come from as far as we know the only Agulnik family in the UK (with off shoots in Oz) although their may have been another family who later changed their surname because of their shame at being called Agulnik
Elise Morse I recently learned that a whole faction of my family were in fact Agulniks, not Braunstein, which is the name my ggf adopted in the U.S. because—as the story was passed down, he walked into the city of Philadelphia and fell in love with the brown stone buildings. He and his brothers were bricklayers, so the new name seemed fitting. I could not find any records on his family until an elderly 2nd cousin informed that the original name was in fact Agulnik. An hour later, I tracked his immigration to Philly, as well as that of his brothers and numerous other family members. Furthermore, family history reveals that this family may have been marranos at one time in history. I would interested in knowing why this name would bring shame, and what more I can learn about those of you with the Agulnik (or variant spellings). I have a tree on Ancestry.com. Does anyone else?
