Comments: my grandgrandpapa told me VARSANO is the name of jewish big nobel family who immigrated from spain 500 years ago in the inquisition era and came originally from BARCELONA....the resemblance VARSANO - BARCELONA and the often mixup between B and V in Ladino and Hebrew and the ending of O in VARSANO which means in Spanish "from"(O=from) like AmericanO ... ItalianO....
well i believe that...do you?
Name: Vitaly ( Vito ) Varsano
Comments: What I could find is 2 different meanings. 1 is a supposed town in Italy somewhere, I found 2 by name Varano.. But your text puts me in thinking that Varsano family was existing before the expulsion...so the family name was not as I knew- name of town were the Varsanos come from in the Ottoman Empire, as you say-- Big family before the expulsion. So the second option that i know is Translation of the name on the languages that were spoken then-- Varsano is " The one that speaks in rimes " obviously poets.

Comments: Hallo, my grandpa was born in tessalonika (now in Greece) at the beginning of the past century. The jewish community there was speaking ladino. He believed that the surname derives from a village in Puglia, Italy, named Conversano. The coast of Puglia was a refuge to jews escaping from Spain after 1492. He used to remember that in tessalonika he belonged to a synagogue called "Puglia".
Name: vito varsano
Comments: I have other explanation too. Apparently in latinic languages sanos means doctor. Healer. Var is the extra addition like ibn van ben etc. I do have very strong healing powers. In my opinion the family name was present before the expultion from Spain .
Name: vito varsano
Comments: Hey Yoav. Guys lets make family reunion of the varsanos. It can be super cool. I can arrange something here in Amsterdam. Or maybe Barcelona
Name: Sammy Varsano
Comments: I belong to the Varsano family in Salonica (Thessaloniki) Greece. Before WW2 there was also a synagogue named VARSANO. NAME Varsano definitely comes from Conversano a small town in Puglia Southern Italy. A Varsano Reunion can be a nice idea.

Comments: Hello Varsanos, as a Varsano descendant (grandmother from Saloniki/Thessaloniki, Greece, and being very close to my grandmother, of course i have heard from her many stories about the family history and lifestyle etc. Apparently she has come from a Varsano line which owned private schools and were traditionally scholarly people. For instance as a young lady in her early twenties at the beginning of 20th century, my granny was sent off from Saloniki to earn a bachelor degree at the Sorbonne, France, in philosophy and agriculture. This was pretty unusual for the era. This part of the story is relevant to the information following.
At one point past i met a another Varsano from the Brazilian branch who are mostly originated from Bulgaria. He and several other Bulgarian (Brazilian) branch of the family got into a project to research the family history tracing it back to the Expulsion from span and Portugal. He told me that he always known that the Bulgarian branch were traditionally craftsmen, specifically shoemakers.
What this group have found out is this:
Just prior to the great Spain deportation there were two brothers and a sister living in Barcelona. One brother a scholar, one a shoemaker and the sister unknown. The sister was burned at the stake by the inquisition after which the two brothers decided to flee Barcelona. After that the families split , where the shoemaker family arrived eventually in Bulgaria, and the scholars branch moved through southern France, then Italy , then northern Greece. So if the story is correct the Saloniki Varsanos and the Bugarian (brazilian) Varsanos are related from before the expulsion. As you might know during WWII Saloniki was encircled by the Nazis in a single night. Very few escaped that night, among which is my grandmother, my grandfather and a baby, my mother, and even less survived the remainder of the war in occupied Greece. Her sister delayed for an hour and did not escape. Most perished in the camps. So there were no one left from this branch to verify the above research. But I find the story interesting and I wonder if there is an historian among us to verify it.
So i guess it is up more members of the Bulgarian branch to do so.

Comments: All,
The origine of the name Varsano is the town of Vars in France. the jews were deported from there around the
year 1400 to Catalunia where they were called "the people of Vars" - Varsanos.. (hence the mix up - Barca Varca). during the Spanish deportation these jews moved to the Balkan countries
